Georgetown, Colorado is one of the most well-preserved historic 19th century mining towns in the United States. Georgetown is a small town of just 1,200 residents nestled in the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 8,530 feet above sea-level. Annually, tens of thousands of visitors are captivated, as they walk the historic streets filled with over two-hundred 19th century buildings, all in impeccable condition. Georgetown features the Georgetown Loop railroad. Nearly 250,000 visitors ride this historic railroad annually. This railroad was one of Colorado's first visitor attractions in the 1800’s. This spectacular stretch of 3 ft. narrow gauge railroad was completed in 1884 in the wake of the Colorado Gold Rush, and considered an engineering marvel for its time. It was used to haul silver ore from the surrounding mines as well as transport passengers visiting the scenic vistas that this region is noted for .The history of the town of Georgetown and the railroad are detailed in this release, including the railroad’s restoration in the 1970’s and its developments on up to the present day.
