Mention of the Dundee Scots High School Band raises the attention and emotions of scores of individuals, not just in the town of Dundee, Illinois, but in the entire nation. No one ever imagined that a small high school band with just 11 members in 1965, would grow in number to over 200, and attain national acclaim.
The Dundee Scots were invited to perform in the inaugurations of two Presidents, Richard M. Nixon and President James E. Carter. They were personally invited to be the “Honor Band” at the 1976 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York City, being invited after their outstanding performance at the “Festival of States” competition in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1975... and that’s just for starters.
The synergy of Thomas Doyle Heffron’s talent, teaching ability and leadership, coupled with the spirit, energy, talent and drive of the band members, as well as the support of the entire community, came together to produce a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This book has been produced as a keepsake, especially for the members of the Scots, whose personal memories of the band continue to stir the emotions of their heart.
